NEW YORK -- AT&T Broadband, the cable television unit of AT&T Corp., said Tuesday it will increase high-speed Internet access fees by $6 a month starting June 1.
The rate increase will affect most of AT&T Broadband's 1.28 million customers who subscribe to the company's AT&TAtHome and AT&T Road Runner cable modem Internet access services.
In some markets, the rate hike will go into effect on July 1 or Aug. 1, depending on advance notice requirements. The company declined to say how much revenue it hopes to generate from the higher fees.
After the increase, most customers will pay $45.95 a month, a 15 percent increase. Customers who own their own cable modems will pay $35.95 a month, while customers who do not also have cable television service from AT&T Broadband will pay $49.95 a month.
AT&T Broadband, which is the dominant cable company in the Chicago area, is the latest high-speed Internet access provider to hike rates. Local telephone company SBC Communications Inc. and Internet service provider EarthLink Inc. recently raised their rates to nearly $50 a month.
